Improving Your Doll Photography: Simple Method of Reflecting Light Onto Your Doll

We posted these pics yesterday on Instagram, so if you follow us there -
you probably don't need to pay attention to this, haha.

But we wanted to show you what using a simple piece of white paper
can do when photographing your dolls.

Yes, you can buy a reflector, or you can get a big white poster board thingy.

But let's say you don't have those things with you.
So look for - a piece of white paper! Woo!
And someone to hold it for you....

So we decided to bring Zoya with us on our holiday voyage.

Zoya ^^^ in a Caroline wig (she is an Ivy doll)

We took Zoya outside.

In a Truly Me #28 wig.
Kit's hat.
Cat ears from Seasoflavender's Etsy.
Cardigan by Clarisse's Closet.
Dress by Sylvie and Bruno.

But her face didn't have a lot of light on it.

And it just wasn't a sunny day, not even sunny with some clouds day.
Just cloudy and dull.
Sometimes cloudy is good.
But cloudy and dark is just not helpful.

So we employed/enslaved a family member
to hold a piece of white paper under her face.

And you can see the difference in the lighting. ^^^

We had the hand move the paper around, different angles.

Some angles are better than others.
So make sure you experiment.

You can get these little shadows above the eyelashes --
but overall, we liked it better with the paper.

It gave us those catch lights in her eyes
that we talked about in Monday's blog post.

And then we moved her over to another side
of the porch for a different background.

Still using the piece of paper.

Still forcing a family member to help us. ;-)

So grab a piece of white paper and a family member
this holiday season when photographing your dolls!!!

Merry Christmas Eve, friends!

And thank you for visiting us today!!!

AG Store Columbus Christmas Tree

Hi again-- Thanks for all of your condolences
on our lost family member.

Today we wanted to show you the Christmas tree that is set up in the AG store in Columbus. We brought Columbia with us on Nov. 10th to the store, so she posed with the tree for us.

Columbia's shirt is from Etsy's A Lady's Heart and her leggings
are from Etsy's Sylvie and Bruno.
We honestly can't remember where we bought her white skirt from
-- but we think it was Etsy's Sew Urban Designs. Her purple shoes are from AG.

Columbia is a Saige doll that we took the wig off of and now
she wears whatever wig she wants to.

Featured Shop: Sylvie and Bruno!

Here at the 'Featured Shop' we show items that we have purchased but have not yet photographed ourselves due to the fact that we have nooooooooo free time.
Ahahahahaaaaaa.
(Panicked laughter.)

Today's Featured Shop is Etsy's Sylvie and Bruno.

We have bought a lot from them.
A LOT.
In fact, about 1/3 their sales are to us.
Yes, we are shameless.

These are all their pics.
If you are the seller and you don't want your pics here,
just comment below and we will take this post down. :-)

Sylvie and Bruno's DW 2012 Fashion Design Challenge Entries,
which we purchased.

Other beautiful items we have hoarded, I mean collected.

And here is a dress we have featured on the blog.

We featured it on Adanya at her Halloween Birthday Party last year.

Using Tinsel for Holiday Photos: Part Two

Here we go with Part Two...

Again this idea is from The Spicys Doll Blog

We assembled ourselves in front of the tinsel.

TIP: Click on any of our photos to be brought to a larger version of it in a slideshow in case you want to see our shots enlarged.

Liv changed her outfit for the shots, so we were both wearing our holiday sweaters.

Liv's sweater is also from Buzzybea on Etsy, and her fish pants are from Acorn Soup/Fox and Family on Etsy. They were originally MY fish pants. But I lent them to her. I am so generous and awesome.
Again, Liv's Janes shoes were custom-made for us by A Bee Line on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ABeeLine

Pants and leggings and shoes.

Purple sweater.

Red sweater.

Practicing head-shots.

Two good head-shots with our normal lens.

Using Tinsel for Holiday Photos: Part One

Sup peoples, Maples here.

This is a "Maple Insists" post -- I insisted that we have a holiday photo shoot this year. And I insisted I be in it. Despite this new girl being here and everyone being excited about that.
Liv Something is her name.

Nora was taking the photos and said it would be nice if Liv and I were in the shoot together.
Sigh. I guess I'll accept that.

So this year's Holiday Photo Shoot was based on an idea from the The Spicys Doll Blog.

Eventually we managed to come up with these two portrait shots with our new 50mm lens, which you can see them on our Facebook Page as well.

TIP: Click on any of our photos to be brought to a larger version of it in a slideshow in case you want to see our shots enlarged.

More of those 50mm shots will be coming here on the blog, but right now they are on the other computer, in a different state.

So for this post you'll just have to live with the set-up and
the next post will be normal (non-50mm) shots.

Like The Spicys recommend, we slapped some tinsel around a clothes hanger.
Then we packaged-taped that hanger to the closet door that we usually stand in front of.
(Ignore the door handle...)

For the tinsel-prepping Liv is wearing a plaid button-down shirt custom-ordered from Royal Doll Boutique on Etsy. A grey tank top and jeans from Liberty Jane. Liv's Janes shoes were custom-made for us by A Bee Line on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ABeeLine

I, Marvelous Maple, am wearing a tank top and leggings from Sylvie and Bruno on Etsy, and a sweater from Buzzybea on Etsy. My shoes are from American Girl.

For two dolls it probably makes more sense to do two hangers and two sets of tinsel. Or even more tinsel if you wanted full-body shots in front of the tinsel. We were mostly going for head-shots though.

Here I am telling Liv how to arrange the tinsel.

Here she is listening to me like a good girl.

Stay tuned for Part Two...
when we assemble ourselves in front of the tinsel in preparation for the head-shots.
